Sulky Review: My Experience with Sulky Cotton Petites 12

Sulky Review: My Experience with Sulky Cotton Petites 12

Many of you have already discovered and embraced Sulky thread, but I wanted to test it out myself on different linen counts. In this review, I share my experience with Sulky Cotton Petites 12 and offer tips for anyone interested in trying these threads.

First Impressions of Sulky on 32 Count Linen

I usually embroider on 36 count/14 threads per cm linen, but I find Sulky thread a bit too thick for that. Since I wanted a relaxing project for my holiday, I decided to try a project on 32 count/13 threads per cm linen, where Sulky Cotton Petites 12 worked perfectly.

Color Choice and Project

As I was busy preparing my book on Red Samplers, I decided to embroider one of these samplers with Sulky thread. I chose the color 1169, a warm, deep red (view the color here), and worked on 32 count/12.6 threads per cm linen in Platinum. Stitching with a single thread on an easy-to-use spool made it truly relaxing. Here’s a sneak peek:

For the full result, you’ll have to wait until the book is released!

Holiday Project: Hygge Holiday in Sulky Colors

I brought a second project with me on holiday: the “Hygge Holiday” by Hands on Design. (Please note: pattern is unfortunately no longer available) This pattern can be stitched in various color combinations, and I adapted the “Classic Holiday” version into Sulky thread. My color choices were:

• White: 1071

• Solid Green: 0630

• Sand: 1838

• Variegated Gold Yellow: 4044

• Variegated Brown: 4011

• Variegated Red: 4042

• Variegated Green: 4050

I’ve also created a Christmas set with these colors, perfect for all your holiday stitching projects!

Considerations: Color Range and Suitable Fabrics

While I’m very happy with Sulky thread, the limited number of colors can make it challenging to convert patterns with a wide range of colors into Sulky. Nevertheless, it’s highly recommended – especially for its price!

My only drawback is that Cotton 12 is suitable only for coarser fabrics. For finer fabrics (36-40 count/14-16 threads per cm), Sulky Cotton 30 would be ideal. This thinner version is available in the same colors as Cotton 12 and is also suitable for quilting. Since Sulky 30 comes on larger 450-meter spools, the price would be around €5.00.

DMC/Sulky

Saskia Gijselhart was so kind to make a list with DMC compared to Sulky and vice versa. Download the list sorted by DMC: DMC Sulky or download the list sorted by Sulky: Sulky DMC. (click on the link to open the file)

Would Sulky Cotton 30 Be a Good Addition? What do you think? Would you like to see Sulky 30 in our collection? Let me know; I’d love to hear your thoughts!
