Stories of a Street
Soed Idee recently sponsored a project in Rotterdam that I will tell you more about.
The project we sponsored is called 'Stories of a Street'.
Stories of a Street wisely documents the overlooked stories of the Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam. This street, like many other parts of the city, is undergoing a rapid gentrification process, with residents being pushed to the suburbs. [Gentrification is actually the renewal/renovation of old buildings in a city. This often involves pushing poorer people out of the city center because rents become too high for them to pay.]
Designers Leyla Hepsaydir and Rebekka Schächer believe that architects and planners have a responsibility to care for the most vulnerable. By collecting, drawing and sharing these stories, they want to support the residents of the Nieuwe Binnenweg to regain their freedom of choice and to enter into a conversation about a just city and the future of Rotterdam. Building on existing networks of the street, they will archive collected stories in the form of a tapestry for the city.
Soed Idee supplied embroidery thread for this tapestry. Leyla and Rebekka emailed us after the opening of the exhibition with some beautiful photos.
They will also give workshops to work together on the tapestry.
Wat een mooi initiatief. En wat leuk dat Soed Idee daaraan heeft meegewerkt!
